Useful Tips for Refrigerator Care and Maintenance

Refrigerators, like other appliances at home, need proper care and maintenance. Storing your food in the fridge can keep it tasty and nutritious. This also helps preserve the quality and life of your supplies. Once you leave the door and seals open, air can seep through and spoil the food faster. You do not want to throw away fresh food and leftovers so inspect the fridge regularly.

You may encounter problems when you keep the fridge in poor condition. Failing to resolve these issues can reflect on your garbage bins and electric bills. Zalmen Pollak shared some tips on caring for your refrigerator to help you save food and energy.

Check the fridge seals

Fridge seals are not just ordinary rubbers. These keep the doors closed tight, preventing air from going in and out of the storage. Your refrigerator can also maintain the temperature inside. It is likely to work harder and consume more energy when the gaskets are broken.

Do simple tests to find out if there are hidden cracks in your seals. Close the door and let your hands feel the lids. Once you sense cold air in your palms, it may be time to contact a fridge seals repair company. Their specialists can fix or replace the gaskets and framework when necessary.

Look at the compressor

Compressor fans are prone to overheating when the fridge works too hard. You may notice this easily with the unusual noises inside the refrigerator. If the compressor clicks on or off on its own, check if it needs cleaning or professional services. There is also something wrong with the unit if the refrigerator gives off uneven temperature.

Keep the fridge closed as possible

Refrigerators consume more energy if you open and close them regularly. Prevent higher electric bills by saving more and reducing the times you open the fridge. If you drink water often, provide a pitcher with ice so you do not have to get inside. Limit the food you store in the fridge and choose only the perishable goods.

Do not put hot food

The thermostat in the fridge does an extra task when it has to cool down hot food. Once the warm air circulates inside, the system works and balances out the temperature. This also leads to higher energy consumption. It is advisable to wait for the food to cool down before storing them in the refrigerator.

Replace old fridge

Your old refrigerator may have its sentimental value, but it may be time to let it rest. Outdated models are likely to consume three times more energy. Replace your antique fridge and look for energy efficient units. The latest versions have better thermostat, compressor, and structure. These units also keep up with style and home trends.

It is also important to pay attention to thermostat settings. Changing it often may force the compressor to work harder and adjust to different temperatures.

7 Easy Steps to Choosing the Right Humidifier

If you experience physical or health related symptoms triggered by dry indoor air, chances are low indoor humidity is present and a humidifier is needed. Humidifiers can relieve problems such as dry skin, itchy eyes, a scratchy throat or sinus complications. Before investing in a humidifier, there are two things consumers need to consider first: a) the size of the room your humidifier will go in and b) the type of humidifier required for your specific needs.

Humidifiers vary in output per day, the size and gallon specifications. Knowing whether the room selected for the humidifier will be a child's room, family room or for the whole house, is key to optimum performance. A console humidifier is suitable for very large areas. Smaller room humidifiers will accommodate small or medium rooms, dorm rooms or office spaces. Becoming familiar with the different categories of humidifiers will determine which system best suits your indoor living environment. Zalmen Pollak shared 7 tips to determine the best fit for your needs.

Warm Mist Humidifier: This humidifier uses a heating element to boil the water and emits warm steam in the air. Individuals living in an especially cold climate will reap the benefits of this type of humidifier.

Cool Mist Evaporative Humidifier: This humidifier naturally adds moisture to indoor air and uses a wick filter that is constructed with honeycomb filtration. Mineral pollutants and other contaminants found in water are trapped by this type of filtration.

Top Fill Humidifier: This humidifier is ideal for individuals having difficulty carrying around heavy containers or suffering from arthritis. Water can be poured into the top of this model with ease.

Ultrasonic Humidifier: This unit is perfect for increasing indoor moisture to relieve conditions that contribute to sinus irritation, nasal congestion and a dry cough. The ultra quiet, ultrasonic humidifier breaks the water down into a fine mist by using high frequency sound waves.

UV Germ Free Humidifier: By using an ultraviolet light, this system will kill germs, mold, viruses and bacteria that build up and migrates in the humidifier. It is an ideal option for a child or infant's room.

Cool Mist Impeller Humidifier: As a perfect choice for fighting cough and cold symptoms, the water in this impeller humidifier break down into small droplets that is released into the air as a fine mist.

Warm Mist Vaporizer: Typically smaller than a warm mist humidifier, some vaporizers feature an integrated medicine cup for using vaporizing inhalants if needed. This system does not require the use of the filter replacements.

A humidifier will help to ease certain flu and cold symptoms, or respiratory conditions. For optimum performance and proper maintenance, filter replacements, if applicable, should be changed as recommended.

How to Choose the Right Laundry Appliances

If it's time for a new clothes washer and dryer, these tips will help you select the models you'll really love. Some come in matched pairs, but you may want to mix and match to find appliances with the features that are right for you.

How Big Should You Buy?

Most people buy clothes washers and dryers that are too large. They get swayed by the salesperson who pushes the 4.4 cubic foot washer and 7.4 cubic foot dryer that can do king-size quilts, hug pillows and your entire wardrobe in one load. The problem is, you may rarely use the capacity. When you run the washer and dryer below capacity, you are wasting energy, water and money. Choose capacities that will run full most or all of the time.

Do you Want Sanitizing Heat?

Quite a few washing machines are equipped with on-board heaters to boost the water temperature to levels certified by the National Safety Foundation (NSF). The heat is usually rated to kill the proverbial 99.9% of all viruses and bacteria. Who buys these machines? They are popular with those whose daily work and habits take them into crowded public places where germs are prevalent. Parents of young children also buy them, and they make sense if older adults are in the household since they tend to be more susceptible to serious consequences from illnesses.

Steam Dryers are Hot - But Will You Use the Steam?

The steam function on the dryer is useful for removing wrinkles from clothing. It will reduce the need for ironing. If you launder your business attire instead of having it dry cleaned, then the steamer might come in quite handy, reducing ironing time significantly.

A second reason to consider steam is that it can be used to kill germs and bacteria on soft items that are non-washable. These items include pillows, children's toys and stuffed animals. The steam function, like the sanitizing heat in the washer, will boost the cost. If you don't plan to use it consistently, it's not worth the price.

Is the Extra Cost of Gas Worth It?

Gas dryers cost much less to run than electric dryers. They often cost a bit more to buy, and if you don't have a gas line already, installation can be costly. If a gas line is in place, then the hands-down choice is a gas dryer. It heats up immediately to shorten drying times. Your utility bills will be lower because gas costs less.

If you need a gas line run, contact a plumber for an estimate. Then, take into consideration how long you intend to live in your current residence. If it's just a few years, electric might be a cost-effective choice. If you intend to live there at least 3 years, the cost savings of gas might make installing a gas line a good choice.

When you buy a clothes washer and dryer with the right capacity, features and performance for your needs, you'll be satisfied with it now and in the years to come.
